Surgió en 1965 en Los Ángeles, California, Estados Unidos, por iniciativa del vocalista Jim Morrison y el teclista Ray Manzarek. Luego se les unieron el guitarrista Robby Krieger y el baterista John Densmore. Jim Morrison murió en 1971, en circunstancias que no han sido esclarecidas completamente.
